The Nosy Neighbors

In March, I squeezed in a little down time at my mom's. She's got 5.5 acres in the "country" - it's starting to become fairly well populated. In between chores and devouring books, I met the new neighbors. They're an unusually curious bunch and came running when I got close to the fence.

These are (were?) beef cattle. You want fries with that?

Aw, they're really cute (in a looming, humongous way. :) )

When my husband and I were last at my uncle and aunt's farm, we walked over to a neighbouring farm, and for the first time ever, I (we) got to see the neighbours entire herd of bison!

But it's not a good idea to get close to the fence, with bison, especially if they have calves around. The fence wouldn't stop them if they decided they really wanted you flat with a hoof-print on your face. Thus, no petting bison noses!

They look cute when you're stroking them but I'm a bit scared of cows - they're just so big!

Baby cows!! They look like Charolais, maybe? We don't have their breed around here so much, so seeing a herd of them is nice (except for WHY they're a herd and there, of course -- who could eat something with such a sweet nose!).

My neighbor across the street last year ran herefords; this year it's angus. And another neighbor who used to run some of his cows on my back pasture has longhorns. There are bison down the street -- but not a whole herd of them.

And the name of the road I live on: Calf Creek Lane. How perfect is that? Part of Calf Creek runs along the north side of my property.

You, dear Sarah, need to go unwind more often :o)

First I've seen that color cow next door. I think you're right about the breed, Phoenix. He usually has angus and there were still a few dark brown to black ones (plus one that was almost brindle).

The cows at Animal Acres (a farm animal rescue here in L.A.) were a lot bigger than these guys. Like about a foot or more taller. They were a bit on the scary big side, FHH.

Have never been close to bison. Not sure I've seen one from afar either (except maybe at the Wild Animal Park or something). Sounds like they're not exactly placid, JJ.
